Lighting for Health & Productivity

Did you realize that the wrong choice of lighting in your offices and/or warehouses can have adverse effects on your employees’ health and productivity? You’re not alone. Although most people understand the differences in the initial and long-term costs of different lighting options, few are aware of these other factors.

There are two major factors to consider when choosing your lighting options:

The Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

The CRI determines how accurately colours appear under the lights. Incandescent lights rank 95 to 100 on a scale of 1 to 100. Flourescents, on the other hand, have a poor CRI. LED lighting, although slightly less accurate than incandescent lighting, still provides excellent colour rendering.

Colour Temperature

Colour temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. Lighting at the lower end of the scale, typically about 2,000 to 3,500, produces a warm, yellowish light that is best for relaxation, while lighting over 3,500 produces cooler lighting, simulating daylight, and is best for tasks, productivity, and employee safety. As a general rule, we recommend 4,000 to 5,000 Kelvin for most commercial applications.

LEDs: The Future of Lighting

Because of a worldwide focus on energy efficiency, the number of available lighting options is declining. Incandescent lighting has been virtually eliminated from the Canadian market, and a number of fluorescent light tubes have also been eliminated. Although fluorescent lights and compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are more energy efficient than incandescent lights, they contain mercury, which is very toxic.

Halogen lamps provide bright, high-quality lighting but are very energy inefficient. Many types of halogen lights have already started being phased out in the U.K. Quebec, Ontario, and B.C. already have standards to eliminate most halogen lamps, and other provinces will likely follow suit in the near future.

If you want to ensure that your commercial lighting will stand the test of time, it would be wise to replace as many incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen lights as possible with LEDs. The only drawback to LED lights has been their initial cost, but they’re getting less expensive all the time. And the long-time cost savings due to their energy efficiency will more than offset higher initial costs.

Lighting Automation

Along with the various types of available lighting, there is also a variety of automated lighting solutions for cell phones, tablets, or computers. Some allow you to control the colour, light intensity (dimming), or even choose which lights will be on. Others can let you set the timing for when lights are on or off and the strength of the lights when turned on.
